How One Man Transformed a Defense

We are filled up with Superstars on defense this year. Edwards, Bush, Sweat, Bryant (we miss you), Malik Muhammad, Austin Booker, and Thieneman. But something was just missing. Enter Ryan Poles. Making a blockbuster trade for the next 2 years’ worth of first round picks and a 4^th this year for the game-wrecking man named Jeffery Simmons. (A fifth-round pick too.)

Drafted by the Tennessee Titans in 2019 in the first round from Mississippi St. He stayed in Tennessee the entire time before his new adventure in Chicago. Donning his famous red sleeves so his daughter can recognize him on the field. (I think bright orange is much better for her to be able to find him what do you think?)

He dominated with the Titans, but with his wins, his offense and wild grouping of coaches during his tenure there he reached his ceiling with those around him, did his best, and remained loyal nonetheless. That is until Chicago traded for him to make a mark here in the land of the Monsters of the Midway

.

But how game-changing is he? We saw Monday night. When off the field the opposing team, Superbowl champs from the year prior, got an average of over 13 yards per play. Thank goodness Simmons was only taking a breath because when he came back onto the field with just his two days in Chicago, he forced the offense led by Darnold and JSN to a solid 3 yards on average.

Now my philosophy, and you will see this bias as I post more, is that 3 yards every play is a first down. I love some mean ground and pound football. This is until it is cut short by three Montez Sweat sacks. (Poor guy only got accredited 1 due to penalties.) And Booker’s ability to reach the quarterback forcing a big-man INT. His presence was felt through my TV! I got the same rush as when Khalil Mack was on our team except it was more terrifying. I get the Rams now with their Aaron Donald. It was a blast to watch.

With Williams on his Tirade, Simmons was the perfect addition. Now if only we could get a cornerback. (Cough, gimme Nahshon Wright, cough.) Stay tuned! It only gets better this Sunday night against a completion less Mayfield and his beefy running backs.
